Alfred Quarterman, Sr., 94, of Tarpon Springs, passed away on June 19, 2024. He was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida, to the late Idellia "Willie" and Richard Quarterman, Sr. He attended Pinellas County High School in Clearwater, FL, as there were no high schools at that time in Tarpon Springs for African Americans, and graduated in 1947. After graduating, Alfred relocated to New York City. He then enlisted in the Army where he served for 4 years which included 2 years in combat in Korea. After being discharged, he returned to New York City and married Hazel Oliver. He was then employed by New York City Transit Authority as a bus operator, promoted to a dispatcher, transferred to Budget Control, promoted to Superintendent and eventually promoted to Director of Managerial Payroll from which he retired in November, 1990. He relocated to Florida after his retirement. After visiting Rose Cemetery and seeing the deplorable condition it was in, he was spiritually led and motivated to "do something about it." Alfred was instrumental in getting Rose Cemetery listed as a State Historical Site and also getting it listed on the National Register of Historical Places in March, 2017.
Alfred was preceded in death by his son, Alfred Jr. and grandson Martel. Alfred is survived by his wife, Hazel, of 71 years; three children, Alfred Eugene, Elain and Leslie (Gregory); sister in Law, Catherine (late Howard); seven grandchildren, Shawn, Stacey, Todd, Tesha, Alexander, Kristofer and Bonus granddaughter, Crystal; four great grandchildren, Nashiavon, Sabine, Xavier and Brailyn; three honorary sons, Ronnie, Stanley and Qubit; devoted nieces, Cynthia (late Bradley Sr.), Idellia (late Michael) and Tracey; along with a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and loving friends.
