Charles Salley Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Charles Dudley Salley, age 79, on July 3, 2021. Dudley, as he was commonly known, was born in Tampa, on August 11, 1941 to Col. and Mrs. Henry McKie Salley, long time Tarpon Springs residents. Dudley traces his Tarpon Springs roots to his great grandparents who were Tarpon Springs settlers in 1882.

Dudley led an early adventurous life as an Army BRAT, having lived in three states and on the Pacific island of Okinawa before graduating from Tarpon Springs High School in 1959 as Class President. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from Davidson College and attended the University Of Marburg, Germany, during his junior year as an exchange student where he learned to speak fluent German. While in Europe, he also attended a French Language school in Switzerland. He then attended Duke University graduating with a Masters Degree in Economics, while simultaneously receiving an ROTC Commission as an Army Artillery Lieutenant with assignment to the 8th Infantry Division in Germany in an Honest John Rocket Battery with atomic warheads.

After leaving the service, he worked for Minneapolis - Honeywell, on missile assembly programs. Then using his economics degree, he worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where he organized an antitrust section to evaluate proposed bank mergers and acquisitions. Upon leaving the Federal Reserve System he worked for the Georgia State University administration as an Institutional Planner. While there, he completed his PhD in Monetary and Economic History.

During the next 23 years, Dudley taught graduate level economics at Queens College, Berry College, Schiller International University, and Georgia Highlands College sequentially as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor. Over the years, he authored many economics related publications, monographs and staff studies. Even though he retired in 2013, he continued to teach economics part time at various colleges in Georgia and Florida including recently at St. Petersburg College.

His affiliations include American Economic Association, Southern Economic Association, National Association of Business Economists, and Association for Institutional Research. His recognitions include: Sidney Suslow Outstanding Paper Award, Association for Institutional Research, 1977; Teacher of the Year, Georgia Council on Economic Education, Georgia Association of Economics and Finance, 2006; President Georgia Association of Economics and Finance, 2010-2011. Dudley was proud to have once served on the Tarpon Springs Board of Commissioners and most recently as the President of the Tarpon Springs Historical Society, which was founded by his father over 50 years ago.

Dudley is survived by his brother, Major Hammond Salley of Anaheim, CA and nieces Sara Salley Spear, Mary Salley Dixon, Polly Salley Marrero, Rebecca Salley Gonzalez and nephews Russell Salley, Robert Salley, Charles Salley, Joel Salley, and Ernest Salley.
