Kaliope “Betty” Bishop, 85, formerly of Oldsmar, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2022 in Mt. Airy Maryland. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Betty loved serving others with her time, talent, and resources. She lived as she died, surrounded by family with a lot of love and laughter.
Betty was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida and grew up at 420 Pineapple Street near Spring Bayou. Her father John was a sponge diver and her mother Mildred was a homemaker. Betty was an only child but had a close relationship with all her cousins. After graduating high school Betty attended Winona State University in Minnesota, graduating with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education and English. She taught English for a short time before marrying Wallace “Wally” Bishop, Jr. in 1961. Betty & Wally resided in Rockville, Maryland and raised 5 children. Her greatest desire and prayer was for her family to come to know the Lord.
Upon Wally’s retirement, they packed up and moved to Florida to be closer to family. They were members of Lakeside Community Chapel and involved with Haiti Gospel Ministries, AFCI, Children’s Medical Ministries and a radio ministry in Puerto Rico. Betty had the gift of giving and hospitality and loved to open her home to missionaries. Betty was passionately involved in serving the Lord in women’s bible studies for many years, encouraging younger women to love and care for their families.
Betty & Wally thoroughly enjoyed the company of their 5 grown children and their spouses. They had 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Betty especially loved the babies! Before Wally’s passing in 2013, they spent their time between St. Pete Beach and their home in Maryland.
She is survived by her daughters Wendy (Rob) Krop, Chris (Dave) Thomas, Mary (Charley) Burrall, Susan (Mitchell) Calvagno, and son Wallace (Debbie) Bishop, III.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00; and the funeral service starting at 3:00, all on, Saturday, July 9, at the Lakeside Community Chapel, 1893 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater.
