Marggie Lynn Daines, 63, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on November 5, 2019. Born March 1956 in Greensboro, NC to Albert Samuel and Ann Samuel. Lynn worked for the American Red Cross in Pinellas County for 17 years (1977-1994) as their Director of Emergency Services. In this role she recruited and trained hundreds of volunteers, was on call 24/7 for both disaster emergencies and in service to active duty military and their families, and was instrumental in developing a disaster health services program that laid the groundwork for future programs still being followed today. She served the community during Hurricane Elena in 1985, managing a sheltering operation that housed just under 114,000 evacuees for 3 days and set a precedent for large scale evacuations and sheltering in the U.S. Following Hurricane Elena in 1987, she was involved in planning and managing the first ever Florida State Hurricane Conference where 383 attendees began a model conference for providing emergency planners, first responders and community partners a cost-effective collaborative environment in which to learn. This effort grew to be named the Governor’s Hurricane Conference and Lynn’s service continued right through the 33rd conference in May 2019 where 2,100 emergency planners and responders from around the state and nation gathered. Her role in ground-breaking work to improve shelter planning and operations during her career, as well as her contributions to the field of Emergency Management by ensuring the most successful hurricane conference anywhere in the country for over 3 decades, will be missed by a grateful State and profession. She is predeceased in death by her loving husband, Guy E. Daines. She is survived by her stepson, Guy H. Daines (Rene), stepdaughter, Stephanie Daines Guzman; as well as four grandchildren, Guy B., Logan, Evy and Maddy; along with nephews David Motley (Arica) and Eric Motley (Stephanie). A celebration of her life service will be announced after the first of the year.
