Dr. Peter M Byron.
BALLSTON LAKE – Dr. Peter M. Byron, died Tuesday, April 18th at Bay Care Alliant Hospital, Dunedin, Florida. He was 77 years old. Peter is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dolores, who he met in Puerto Rico; his sons, Sean (Leone), Kevin, and daughter Kelly (Christopher) Fraser. He is also survived by his grandchildren Morgan and Monica Fraser and Heaven, Tyler, and Lyjah. Peter was born in Albany, New York. He was predeceased by his father, William Charles Byron, who died when Peter was at a young age and his mother, Helen Vennard Byron Cianciola. He is survived by his stepfather, Phillip Joseph Cianciola, brother retired Lt. General Michael J. Byron (USMC) and his wife, Kathleen. Peter attended elementary and high school in Puerto Rico when his stepfather worked for the United States Navy. He graduated from high school at San Antonio Abad in Humacao, Puerto Rico. His undergraduate degree was from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. His Masters and Ph.D. were from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He taught U.S. military and civilian employee dependent children at the middle school level at Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico and high school and elementary school at Buffalo City Schools, New York. Peter joined the New York State Education
Department, Bureau of Bilingual Education, as the first Supervisor of their Regional Office in Lancaster, New York before transferring to the Bureau of Bilingual Education Office at the State Education Department in Albany, New York. He was subsequently assigned to manage the Lifelong Services Team at the Office of Vocational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) from which he retired. Peter’s career focused on the provision of appropriate educational services for children who spoke languages other than English and included extensive work on the provision of teacher training initiatives to prepare qualified teachers to meet the requirements of the ASPIRA Consent Decree in New York City. The family were long-time members of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Round Lake, N.Y. and Peter served as President of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church Parish Council. The family were members of the Mayfield Yacht Club on the Great Sacandaga Lake and Peter served as an officer of the Yacht Club as Secretary of the Mayfield Yacht Club. Peter was a single hull and multi-hull sailor and with his son, Kevin, established NAV-ED Services Group which was approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to provide training leading to commercial licenses for Captains and Masters in Inland and Near Coastal waters. Peter was also the President of the Great Sacandaga Lake Association for 12 years and taught boater safety classes on the Great Sacandaga Lake in the Adirondacks of New York State. Dolores and Peter spent winters in Cocoa Beach, Ponce Inlet, Hudson and the Florida Keys. They enjoyed cruises and yacht charters in the Florida Keys and the British Virgin Islands as well as ELDERHOSTEL vacations in the United States and Canada. Peter was also on a memorable boat transfer of his son Kevin’s sailboat which they shared on the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida with Dolores as the driver of the ‘chase’ car! The Byron family would like to thank Bay Care for the fine care Peter received.
Services will be held at Corpus Christi Church in Round Lake, NY on July 20th
. Services will begin at 9:30 am with an hour wake, and mass to follow. Interment of cremains will be held at the Church of the Annunciation in Elma, NY on July 22nd at 11am.
